When Iphis is thirteen, a marriage is arranged between her and a girl named Ianthe. The two girls fall in love. Telethusa prays to Isis for a miracle. Isis answers her prayer and, to the delight of Telethusa and Iphis, transforms Iphis into a young man.
Why is Iphis raised as a boy?
Iphis was born as a girl but raised as a boy, because her father demanded that if her mother were to have a girl, she would have to kill the baby, since they could not afford her. On the advice of the Egyptian goddess Isis, Telethúsa gives her child the gender-neutral name Iphis, and raises her as a boy.
What is Iphis transformed into?
Iphis was raised male and eventually transformed into a man by the goddess Isis in order to marry Ianthe, daughter of Telestes. Iphis, as recounted in Homer's Iliad, was the slave of Patroclus, Achilles' companion-in-arms.
