Why don t x Wings have shields?

The Empire's leaders depend on sheer weight of numbers in order to overwhelm their enemies, and don't care how many people they lose during a battle. As a result, they spend as little as possible on TIE Fighters, not bothering to install shields - or hyperspace engines and navi-computers.

What weapons do X Wings have?

Armed with four laser cannons and two proton torpedo launchers, the X-wing can take on anything the Empire throws at it. Nimble engines give the X-wing an edge during dogfights, and it can make long-range jumps with its hyperdrive and its astromech droid co-pilot.
