The research team concluded that a 24-hour water-only fast caused an acute increase in total serum cholesterol by raising LDL cholesterol as well as HDL cholesterol. Changes in other risk factors by fasting were found for triglycerides, weight, and glucose, as expected.
How quickly does LDL change?
There is no set period in which cholesterol is guaranteed to drop. Cholesterol-lowering drugs usually produce a change in LDL within 6 to 8 weeks. It is possible for lifestyle changes to change cholesterol levels within weeks. However, it may take longer, usually about 3 months — sometimes more.
What can cause a sudden increase in LDL cholesterol?
Health conditions known to increase cholesterol levels include:
- Diabetes (insufficient production of the hormone insulin)
- Obesity.
- Kidney disease.
- Cushing syndrome (an excess production of hormones)
- Hypothyroidism (an underactive thyroid)
- Liver diseases including cirrhosis and nonalcoholic steatohepatitis.
- Alcoholism.
