What's a Mandrake Root?

A mandrake is the root of a plant, historically derived either from plants of the genus Mandragora found in the Mediterranean region, or from other species, such as Bryonia alba, the English mandrake, which have similar properties. The plants from which the root is obtained are also called "mandrakes".

Do mandrake roots really scream?

While it's easily demonstrated that mandrake root doesn't really scream and cause death, that doesn't mean it's safe. In fact, it's a dangerous plant - its use in medicine and witchcraft arose from centuries of study, testing, and, naturally, misuse and accidents along the way.

Is mandrake plant illegal?

The sale of mandrake is prohibited in some countries, and modern uses for mandrake are limited. Historically, herbal mandrake was thought to have great powers and was used to cure nearly any ailment, from constipation and colic to convulsions.
