How do shoulder guards work?
The shoulder pads do two things for the player: They absorb some of the shock of impact through deformation. The pads at the shoulders are strung on tight webbing and deform on impact. They distribute the shock through a larger area so there is less pressure at the point of impact.
Do pauldrons restrict movement?
pauldrons over the years, and have made that style, myself. They cause very little restriction of motion, and one can easily touch the back of one's head, or raise one's arm up straight in the air. They won't allow you to touch your elbows together, though.
