ESR test results are measured in millimeters per hour (mm/hr). The following are considered normal ESR test results: Women under age 50 should have an ESR between 0 and 20 mm/hr. Men under age 50 should have an ESR between 0 and 15 mm/hr. Women over age 50 should have an ESR between 0 and 30 mm/hr.
What is a high ESR level?
Extremely elevated results
An extremely high ESR value, which is one above 100 mm/hr, may indicate one of these conditions: multiple myeloma, a cancer of plasma cells. Waldenstrom's macroglobulinemia, a white blood cell cancer. temporal arteritis or polymyalgia rheumatica.
Is ESR 35 high?
Of the patients with nonmalignant disease, 9.6 percent had an ESR of less than 10 mm/hr and 25.6 percent a rate of less than 20 mm/hr. Thus, in about a quarter of the patients, the ESR was below the top normal level for the elderly. Moreover, the ESR may be as high as 35--40 mm/hr in healthy aged persons.
