The first use of CGI in a movie came in 1973 during a scene in "Westworld." "Cats" has been ridiculed for its strange use of CGI, but that doesn't mean it isn't innovative.
When did CGI become popular?
Until the late 1990s CGI was used sparingly, but in 1995 Toy Story became the first full-length CG feature. With only a small team of animators, our favourite characters, from Woody to Buzz Lightyear, came to life.
When did CGI happen?
2D CGI was first used in movies in 1973's Westworld, though the first use of 3D imagery was in its sequel, Futureworld (1976), which featured a computer-generated hand and face created by then University of Utah graduate students Edwin Catmull and Fred Parke.
