Bright red blood in the stool typically indicates that there is bleeding in the rectum or colon, which may be a sign of colon or rectal cancer. Rectal bleeding can also be caused by hemorrhoids.
When should you worry about rectal bleeding?
Call 911 or emergency medical assistance. Seek emergency help if you have significant rectal bleeding and any signs of shock: Rapid, shallow breathing. Dizziness or lightheadedness after standing up.
What percentage of rectal bleeding is cancer?
Results. The consultation rate for rectal bleeding in patients over the age of 34 years was 15 per 1000 per year; 3.4% had colorectal cancer. The prevalence of cancer increased to 9.2% when the rectal bleeding was associated with a change in bowel habit, and to 11.1% when it was without perianal symptoms.
