What Does Caliectasis Mean?

Caliectasis is a condition that affects the calyces in your kidneys. Your calyces are where urine collection begins. Each kidney has 6 to 10 calyces. They're on the outer edges of your kidneys. With caliectasis, the calyces become dilated and swollen with extra fluid.

What is mild Calyceal dilatation?

Calyces are the cavity or conduit that collects the urine from the kidney pyramids and funnels the urine into the ureter (the tube running from the kidney to the bladder). If this conduit or cavity becomes enlarged and ballooned with urine, possibly because of blockage of urine flow, this leads to calyceal dilatation.

Is hydronephrosis a serious problem?

Severe cases of urinary blockage and hydronephrosis can damage the kidneys and lead to kidney failure. If kidney failure occurs, treatment will be needed with either dialysis or a kidney transplant. However, most people can recover from hydronephrosis if treated promptly.
