Where Is Functional Isomer?

What is it? Functional isomerism occurs when substances have the same molecular formula but different functional groups. This means that functional isomers belong to different homologous series. You won't meet these in GCSE Chemistry, but you do come across them at A Level.

What are the functional isomers?

Functional isomers are constitutional isomers bearing different functional groups. eg. 1: Acetone (1) and propanal (2) are constitutional isomers. They contain different functional groups. Thus, 1 and 2 are functional isomers.

What are functional isomers with example?

Two or more compounds having the same molecular formula but different functional groups are called functional isomers and this phenomenon is termed as functional group isomerism. For example, the molecular formula C3H6O represents an aldehyde and a ketone.
