Where Do Hibernators Live?

When bats are ready to hibernate, they must find a place that stays above freezing. They gather together in caves called hibernacula. Bears are not "true" hibernators. They are one of the "light sleepers." They are easily awakened from their winter slumbers.

Where can Hibernators be found?

Among mammals, true hibernators are found only in the orders Chiroptera (bats), Insectivora (hedgehogs and allies), and Rodentia (ground squirrels, marmots, etc.).

Where do hibernating animals live?

Many animals hibernate in a den all winter, but some animals hibernate in the summer. Some fish can hibernate in a waterproof mucus envelope if their lake dries up. Certain birds and bats enter a sort of daily hibernation called torpor.
