Bismuth finds its main uses in pharmaceuticals, atomic fire alarms and sprinkler systems, solders and other alloys and pigments for cosmetics, glass and ceramics. It is also used as a catalyst in rubber production.
Where is bismuth found in nature?
Bismuth does occur free in nature and in such minerals as bismuthinite (Bi2S3) and bismite (Bi2O3). The largest deposits of bismuth are found in Bolivia, although bismuth is usually obtained as a by-product of mining and refining lead, copper, tin, silver and gold.
Is bismuth found in food?
Bismuth is a heavy metal similar to lead and arsenic, but not nearly as toxic. It is found naturally in very small amounts in some foods and its sulfide and oxide compounds are important for use in cosmetics and medicines.
