Many employers and certainly many employees may be shocked to learn that “Paruresis,” commonly known as “shy bladder syndrome” or the inability to urinate with others present, qualifies as a disability under the Americans with Disabilities Act Amendments Act of 2008 (“ADAAA”).
Is there a cure for paruresis?
Generally, the diagnosis is paruresis if you can urinate successfully when alone at home. The doctor may suggest the short-term use of drugs such as tranquillisers or antidepressants. However, these drugs will only reduce anxiety, not cure the condition.
Is paruresis in the DSM 5?
Paruresis is the inability to urinate in situations where there is perception of scrutiny, or potential scrutiny, by others. According to DSM-5, paruresis is classified as social phobia.
