Switched Attenuators
Instead of having just one attenuator to achieve the required degree of attenuation, individual attenuator pads can be connected or cascaded together to increase the amount of attenuation in given steps of attenuation.
Can you connect attenuators in series?
You should not try to cascade two TA197 10:1 attenuators for 2 reasons. The first is safety - the attenuator is rated at 400V max. Using 2 in series does not increase the safe working voltage - it is still 400V.
Where do you put the attenuator?
This is best installed far from the cable modem upstream, i.e. outside of your residence at the tap. When you attenuate the upstream frequencies, the cable modem is forced by the CMTS to increase its power, to "speak louder".
