The Pass is closed after hunting season November 28th and weather permitting reopens on Memorial weekend.

Season : Closed during the winter. Highway usually fully opens sometime in May or early June. Lower elevations of the road (outside of the National Forest) are open year-round. During the winter, the closed portion of the road is used for snowmobiling.

During winter, the highway is closed due to heavy snowfalls. It fully opens in late May (around Memorial Day), sometimes in early June, and closes in late November (after the hunting season). The parts of the road that are outside of the Bitterroot National Forest are open year-round.
