This is a fairly unusual situation which can occur when someone has gained weight during pregnancy, lost the excess fat in their abdominal area, but their skin is not elastic enough to completely contract. This often looks less like a shelf and more like a small skin roll sitting on top of the C-section scar.
Does everyone get a shelf after C-section?
Women who give birth via cesarean section are often left with a pouch of excess skin above their scar, commonly referred to as a c-section pooch or c-shelf. Since everyone heals differently, it can't be predicted whether or not a c-shelf will develop and, if it does, if it will fade naturally.
When does C-section shelf go away?
After 6-12 months, if that C-section shelf is still there, chances are high that it will always be there unless we treat it. The good news is that surgery to remove the C-section scar also gives your board-certified plastic surgeon access to cut out the extra skin of the shelf.
