Effects of sedation or anesthesia on heart rate
Deep sedation caused approximately 5% decrease in heart rate (p = NS). However, general anesthesia caused a highly significant 24% drop in heart rate, compared to mild conscious sedation.
Does Anaesthesia decrease heart rate?
Bradycardia (decreased heart rate) is a very common anesthetic complication.
What does sedation do to the heart?
All sedatives have adverse cardiovascular side effects. Overall, bradycardia is seen more often in patients receiving dexmedetomidine, and hypotension is seen more often in patients receiving propofol. Decrease in heart rate and blood pressure may also be accompanied by other hemodynamic changes.
