Acheulean industries are found in Africa, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia as far east as Kolkata, India (East Asia was characterized by a tool tradition called the chopper chopping-tool industry).
When did Acheulean tools appear?
It is thought that Acheulean technologies first developed about 1.76 million years ago, derived from the more primitive Oldowan technology associated with Homo habilis. The Acheulean includes at least the early part of the Middle Paleolithic.
Where are the earliest Acheulean tools found how long ago?
The earliest known evidence of this technology dates back to c. 1.7 Ma. and is limited to two sites (Kokiselei [Kenya] and Konso [Ethiopia]), both of which lack functionally-associated fauna. The functionality of these earliest Acheulean assemblages remains unknown.
