Ball Moss (Tillandsia recurvata) is gray-green and found on tree branches or telephone wires. It is often mistaken for a small clump of Spanish moss. It grows in clumps 6-10″ in diameter on most kinds of trees. Tiny seeds are blown by the wind until they land on a tree branch.
Where does GREY moss come from?
It's native to Mexico, Central America, South America, the U.S., and the Caribbean. In the U.S., it grows from Texas to Virginia, staying in the moister areas of the South. Its preferred habitat is a healthy tree in tropical swampland.
What is tree moss good for?
They are the first plants to grow on rocky land and by breaking down rocks and soil they help create an environment for regular plants to grow. They absorb moisture, acting like sponges which helps prevent soil erosion.
