Do Solar Roadways Work?

While the concept quickly gained broad public support — and funding — most energy experts were skeptical of the solar roadways from the start. Solar photovoltaic technology is getting cheaper, more efficient and more resilient all the time. But it still doesn't make a good replacement for asphalt.

Why Solar Roadways are a bad idea?

On the solar roadway, the lights would be difficult to shield, making them much more. difficult to see during the day. At night, they would be easily visible, but this also causes a problem: with no power being produced at night, the lights would be drawing electricity directly out of the grid.

Are solar roadways being used?

As of 2019, more of the road has begun to fall apart. With each year of use, the Wattway Solar Road's ability to produce electricity has declined rapidly, and at current standing, the road is only producing an approximate 38,000 kilowatts.
