Bufotoxins are a family of toxic steroid lactones or substituted Tryptamines of which some may or may not be toxic. They occur in the parotoid glands, skin and venom of many toads (genus Bufo) and other amphibians, and in some plants and mushrooms.
Do all toads have Bufotoxin?
All Bufo species produce these substances, but there is variation in the quantity of each substance produced by different toads. For instance, Bufo marinus and Bufo viridis contain the highest known plasma level of endogenous digitalis-like substances, which are collectively known as bufadienolides.
Where do Bufo toads live?
They can be found in central and south Florida and in an isolated population along the Florida Panhandle. They live in urbanized habitats and agricultural lands but also in some natural areas, including floodplain and mangrove swamps.
