The people of the community were trying to eliminate sources of unhappiness. They believed that if no one had any more or less than another, had the same amount of love for every person, then everyone would be equal and therefore equally happy.

Why was sameness created?

The people chose Sameness in order to control everything in their environment and their citizens, to prevent anyone from feeling discomfort. At first, Jonas does not see anything unusual about Sameness. Things are just the way they have always been.
