Evolution of the mantua
The earliest mantuas emerged in the late 17th century as a comfortable alternative to the boned bodices and separate skirts then widely worn.
What was worn under a mantua?
To give the figure the required shape, stays (an 18th century precursor to the corset) and hooped petticoat, or panniers, were worn underneath. Designed to reflect the wearer's status, mantuas were typically decorated with opulent embroidery incorporating gold or silver thread or gilt lace.
What is mantua making?
The Mantua-Maker is a historical sewing pattern company specializing in women's clothing. All patterns are multi-sized, and are based on actual garments, pattern drawings, or engravings and photographs made during the time the garment was worn.
