No protection is needed for a television antenna or flagpole whose mast enters the earth. Both are automatically grounded, and lightning will simply travel down their length into the soil. But an antenna or other pole that does not contact the earth has to be linked to it by means of grounding equipment.
How do you ground a flag pole?
You should dig a hole four times larger than the diameter of the pole. It should also be deep enough so the flagpole ground sleeve is flush with the surface. Do not use sand or dirt as fill around the sleeve. Instead, use crushed rocks.
How much of flagpole should be in ground?
When you dig your hole, you should make it about 4 to 6 times the butt diameter of your flagpole. If you know your conditions tend toward the very windy side, you may want to go with 6 times the butt diameter. Also, if your ground conditions are sandy, a bigger foundation hole is better.
