Who Is Levator Ani?

The levator ani is a broad, thin muscle group, situated on either side of the pelvis. It is formed from three muscle components: the pubococcygeus, the iliococcygeus, and the puborectalis.

How do you get levator ani?

Levator Ani Syndrome results from spasm in the pelvic floor muscles. It is often caused by trauma in or around the pelvis, abdomen or back. Weak muscles can also spasm.

What does levator feel like?

It is not known why the levator ani muscle spasms. The muscle spasm causes pain that typically is not related to defecation. The pain usually lasts less than 20 minutes. Pain may be brief and intense or a vague ache high in the rectum.
