In Unix to view the file, we can use vi or view command . If you use view command then it will be read only. That means you can view the file but you will not be able to edit anything in that file. If you use vi command to open the file then you will be able to view/update the file.

There are a lot of enhancements above Vi: multi level undo, multi windows and buffers, syntax highlighting, command line editing, filename completion, on-line help, visual selection, etc.. How do I view files in Linux?

Usually, the log files are rotated frequently on a Linux server by the logrotate utility. To watch log files that get rotated on a daily base you can use the -F flag to tail command. The tail -F will keep track if new log file being created and will start following the new file instead of the old file.
