Why Use Proficiency Scales?

Why Use Proficiency Scales?

A proficiency scale is a table used by teachers and students to determine the student's current level of progress toward meeting the standard. In addition to meeting the standard, the student demonstrates applications that go beyond what was taught in class.

What is a learning progression or proficiency scale used for?

Proficiency Scales articulate learning progressions for each prioritized standard and describe how students' understanding of a topic or concept develops over time. Prioritized standards are those standards identified as the most essential for mastery in a particular course.

What is the difference between a proficiency scale and a rubric?

For example, we may look at a writing piece and use a rubric to give students feedback on their word choice, spelling and introduction. We use a proficiency scale when we are monitoring a student's progress on one standardover several pieces of work.
