Why Do Dogs Pant?

Why Do Dogs Pant?

Dogs do not sweat like humans do. They pant to keep themselves cool. If it's very hot outside or if the dog is dehydrated, it can be much harder for them to breathe, thus they will pant heavily to cool down.

Why is my dog panting for no reason?

It's normal for dogs to pant, especially when they're hot, excited, or energetic. Heavy panting is different, though, and may be a sign your dog is dangerously overheated, coping with a chronic health problem, or has experienced a life-threatening trauma.

How do I know if my dog is panting too much?

When is Dog Panting Abnormal?
  1. Appears excessive compared to the dog's normal panting pattern.
  2. Occurs at inappropriate times (when the dog is not overly warm)
  3. Sounds raspier, louder, or harsher than normal.
  4. Occurs with more exertion than normal.
