To assume a brace or crash position is an instruction that can be given to prepare for a crash, such as on an aircraft; the instruction to 'brace for impact!' or 'brace! brace!' is often given if the aircraft must make an emergency landing or land on water.
How does bracing for impact help?
One study found that at least half the victims in head-on collisions press their heads and torsos back against their seats, locking their arms against the steering wheel or dashboard. While this position might increase the risk of breaking an arm or leg, it helps protect the head and chest from severe injuries.
What do flight attendants say when bracing for impact?
Common responses were: “brace”; “head down, stay down”; and “grab your ankles.” One airline said that the cockpit crew would give the command “brace,” while the cabin crew would give the command “head down, stay down.”
