When Do Cats React to Silvervine?

When Do Cats React to Silvervine?

When exposed to powdered silvervine, cats enter a euphoric state that involves behaviours like rolling, chin and cheek rubbing, meowing, drooling and licking. Reactions vary from cat to cat, but the bottom line is that they all go nuts for the stuff. Effects generally last from 5-30 minutes. Sounds like catnip, right?

Do all cats react to silvervine?

The results, published in BMC Veterinary Research, revealed that while one out of every three cats had no response to catnip, nearly 80% of the cats responded to silvervine. In addition to affecting a greater number of cats, silvervine appears to be more potent than catnip.

Can cats be allergic to silvervine?

Yes. Cats have been in contact with this plant in nature for as long as they have existed. There are no reports of toxicity or adverse effects in cats known.
