A low-carbon fuel standard (LCFS) is a rule enacted to reduce carbon intensity in transportation fuels as compared to conventional petroleum fuels, such as gasoline and diesel.
How does the LCFS program work?
Each LCFS credit represents one metric ton (MT) of Carbon Dioxide reduced. Credits are generated as fuel is consumed within transportation, specifically when the fuel has a CI score lower than the target established by CARB. Fuels with a CI score higher than the CARB target generate deficits.
What is California LCFS?
The LCFS is designed to decrease the carbon intensity of California's transportation fuel pool and provide an increasing range of low-carbon and renewable alternatives, which reduce petroleum dependency and achieve air quality benefits.
