From the 11th century onward, crossbows and crossbowmen occupied a position of high status in European militaries, with the exception of the English. During the 16th century military crossbows in Europe were superseded by cannons and muskets.
When did they stop using crossbows?
From approximately the 5th Century AD until AD 947, the crossbow appears to have faded from use. Little, if any, textual or archaeological evidence of the weapon has been found from that period. It was not until the sieges at Senlis (947) and Verdun (985) that evidence of the use of crossbows resurfaced.
Why were muskets used instead of crossbows?

Although the fire rate of arrows was considerably faster than early guns they required considerably less stamina to wield and use.
