You can feed mealworms as much as you like. The more you feed them, the faster they will grow, and the bigger they will become. The most important thing to remember is to feed them every week or two. They can eat decayed plants but they do require fresh produce ever so often to stay hydrated and healthy.
How long can mealworms live without food?
If you do not refrigerate the mealworms, and they remain at room temperature, they will only be usable for feeding for about 3 weeks, because after that point they will metamorphosis into pupa (white, pre-beetle form). Or they will just completely die if they are not in the correct conditions to metamorphosis.
Do you need to feed feeder mealworms?
Because the mealworms will go dormant, it means that they will go months without eating or drinking any necessary nutrients. So it is crucial that, before refrigeration, the mealworms are given some type of substance that can sustain their bodies during dormancy. Fresh vegetables are the best source to offer them.
