Intussusception is a condition in which one segment of intestine "telescopes" inside of another, causing an intestinal obstruction (blockage). Although intussusception can occur anywhere in the gastrointestinal tract, it usually occurs at the junction of the small and large intestines.
Where does intussusception occur?
In intussusception, one part of your intestine — usually the small intestine — slides inside an adjacent part. This is sometimes called telescoping because it's similar to the way a collapsible telescope slides together.
Where is the most common location for intussusception to occur?
About 90% of the intussusceptions in adults occur in the small or large bowel, while the remaining 10% involve the stomach or a surgically made stoma. Usually the most common site is the small bowel.
