Upon completing the final round and ostensibly finishing second, Stadler was informed that he had violated rule 13-3, illegally building a stance by using the towel to keep from muddying his trousers. The two-stroke penalty meant he had signed an incorrect scorecard on Saturday and he was disqualified.

Why did Stadler get DQ?

Stadler was disqualified for an infraction that occurred during the third round, after he and Burns shot tournament-record-tying, 13-under-par 131s for the first two. On the 14th hole, Stadler placed a towel under his knees while hitting a shot from a kneeling position.

Why is Craig Stadler called the Walrus?

Very popular with the galleries, Stadler is affectionately called "The Walrus" for his portly build and ample mustache. He currently lives in Denver, Colorado. His son Kevin is also a PGA Tour champion.
