Stents are proven to reduce chest pain and damage to the heart muscle during a heart attack and/or in severely ill patients. A recent study published in The Lancet has cast shadows of doubt on the effectiveness of percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), also known as angioplasty or stenting.
What is the success rate of heart stents?
Another study found the chance of being alive after drug-eluting heart stent surgery is about 99 percent after one year.
What is the failure rate of stents?
One-year event-free survival for the whole group was 91.2%. Patients with stent embolization did not have any major adverse cardiac or vascular events. Thus, the rate of stent deployment failure in our series was 3.3%, mainly due to failure to deliver the stent to the site.
