Stylolites form as compressive features during pressure dissolution, where ions are dissolved and deposited in another location: this process is accelerated by high stresses (Fossen, 2016). ... It is here in these areas of low porosity that the dissolved minerals are deposited and the stylolite is formed (Merino, 1992).
Where are Stylolites found?
They are most common along bedding planes of limestone but some are oblique or even perpendicular to bedding . Although the vast majority of stylolites occur in calcareous rocks, stylolites have been found in sandstone, quartzite and gypsum. The word "stylolite" refers to each individual column of stone.
What are Styolites made of?
Stylolite, secondary (chemical) sedimentary structure consisting of a series of relatively small, alternating, interlocked, toothlike columns of stone; it is common in limestone, marble, and similar rock.
