Most raccoons seem to prefer sleeping in large holes in trees or hollow parts of fallen logs. They also find shelter in abandoned cars, attics, crawl spaces, barns, and sheds. Raccoons change dens frequently, sometimes moving on to a new den every night.
Where do raccoons go during the day?
They also often take refuge below homes or underneath woodpiles. Raccoons typically have multiple dens, and they move between them every couple of days. Because they are primarily nocturnal, raccoons during the day will be resting.
Do raccoons sleep on the ground?
Raccoons live in dens. Female groups with young may even share a den. While they don't make their own dens, they will use old dens from other animals. Rotten logs or hollowed out trees are common nests, and they may even sleep on the ground during the spring or summer.
