A Creative Commons license is one of several public copyright licenses that enable the free distribution of an otherwise copyrighted "work". A CC license is used when an author wants to give other people the right to share, use, and build upon a work that the author has created.

When was Creative Commons implemented?

The first set of licences, version 1.0, were issued on 16 December, 2002, inspired in part by the GNU General Public Licence. Headquartered in San Francisco, Creative Commons was officially launched in 2001.

Are Creative Commons licenses enforceable in a court of law? Creative Commons licenses are drafted to be enforceable around the world, and have been enforced in court in various jurisdictions. To CC's knowledge, the licenses have never been held unenforceable or invalid. CC licenses contain a “severability” clause.
