Bedsores — also called pressure ulcers and decubitus ulcers — are injuries to skin and underlying tissue resulting from prolonged pressure on the skin. Bedsores most often develop on skin that covers bony areas of the body, such as the heels, ankles, hips and tailbone.
What does a bed sore look like in the beginning?
First signs.
One of the first signs of a possible skin sore is a reddened, discolored or darkened area (an African American's skin may look purple, bluish or shiny). It may feel hard and warm to the touch.
Where do pressure sores occur?
Pressure ulcers can affect any part of the body that's put under pressure. They're most common on bony parts of the body, such as the heels, elbows, hips and base of the spine. They often develop gradually, but can sometimes form in a few hours.
