Why Are Swallows Protected?

As many businesses have discovered, getting rid of migratory birds like swallows can get complicated. Swallows are protected by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918, which makes it illegal to intentionally capture, kill or disrupt any migratory bird or the nests and eggs of such birds.

Are swallows good to have around?

Swallows, swifts, and martins are beautiful, graceful birds that are highly desirable backyard visitors, but they are not typical backyard birds. Because of that, attracting swallows can be a challenge even for experienced backyard birders with many feeders and a variety of feathered guests.

Can you knock down a swallow nest?

Nests can be removed by knocking or washing them down, and can be effective, but must be started at the first sign of nest building. All traces of mud must be removed otherwise they will be tempted to rebuild the nest.
