Grass, like other plants, absorb adequate nutrients during the day when the sun is out. It draws its energy from sunlight, which enables it to grow constantly, even at night.
Will grass seed germinate if its cold at night?
Seed needs warmth, and the soil must be warm enough for it to germinate. In spring it may start to feel warm, but the soil can still be cold – especially at night! ... Don't water your seed when it's too cold (ground temperatures lower than 8 degrees) or there has been prolonged wet weather.
Will grass grow if it freezes at night?
In late winter, the ground typically freezes and thaws with every night/day cycle. Grass seed will not germinate until the soil reaches about 55 degrees, so you don't have to worry about your grass starting to grow and then being frozen -- it won't happen.
