Oarfish feed primarily on zooplankton, selectively straining tiny euphausiids, shrimp, and other crustaceans from the water. Small fish, jellyfish, and squid are also taken.
How do oarfish catch their prey?
They have very small mouths and no teeth, and they feed by filtering small prey from the water, swimming with their mouths open and capturing their food with modified bones that support their gills.
Where do oarfish lay their eggs?
It is generally believed that, like most other lampridiform fish species, they lay big pelagic eggs by means of broadcast spawning, which should be between 2 and 6 mm in diameter, and float near the water surface for up to 3 weeks, before they hatch.
