J. L. BREWBAKER (University of Hawaii) discovered in 1957 several remarkable correlations between SI-system and pollen features. Gametophytic self-incompatibility occurs nearly always in pollen with two nuclei.
Who coined the term self incompatibility?
The term self incompatibility was originally coined by Stout in 1917. Koelreuter, in the middle of 18th century, first reported self incompatibility in Verbascum phoeniceum plants. Later on numerous cases of self incompatibility in flowering plants were reported which were reviewed by East (1940).
Who discovered sporophytic system?
Classical genetic studies in the 1950s first identified the sporophytic SI (SSI) system in the daisies Crepis foetida, Parthenium argenteum and Cosmos bipinnatus and showed SSI to be regulated by a single polyallelic S locus (Hughes and Babcock, 1950; Gerstel, 1950; Crowe, 1954, respectively).
