How Do Trachea Work?

The Trachea
It can be thought of as the first part of the lungs reached by air when inhaling. The trachea serves to direct air into the two lungs. The trachea has a protective coating of special cells that helps defend against inhaled dust and particles. This airway is also surrounded by muscles and rings of cartilage.

Do you breathe through your trachea?

To get the oxygen your body needs, you inhale air through your mouth and nose. The mucous membranes in your mouth and nose warm and moisten the air, and trap particles of foreign matter (like dirt and dust). The air passes through the throat into the trachea (windpipe).

How does the trachea help you breathe?

The trachea is a tube-like structure within the neck and upper chest. It transports air to and from the lungs when a person breathes. When a person inhales, air travels through the nose or mouth, down the trachea, and into the lungs.
