Note that the Hebrew Bible contains more marriage regulations. A stricter marriage regulation concerning the priests is found in Ezek 44:22: “They [the priests] shall not marry a widow, or a divorced woman, but only a virgin of the stock of the house of Israel, or a widow who is the widow of a priest.”
Can the high priest marry?
The high priest had to abstain from ritual defilement. He may marry only an Israelite virgin (21:13–14). In Ezekiel 44:22 this restriction is extended to all kohanim (priests), an exception being made in favor of the widow of a priest (see Levirate marriage).
Do Levites still exist?
Levites are the descendants of the Tribe of Levi, one of the twelve tribes of Israel. Levites are integrated in Jewish and Samaritan communities, but keep a distinct status. There are estimated 300,000 Levites among Ashkenazi Jewish communities. Total percentage of Levites among Jews is about 4%.
