In June 1969, they performed one of the first colonoscopies. Three months later, using the electrosurgical polypectomy snare designed by Dr. Shinya, they used the procedure to remove polyps.
What did they do before colonoscopy?
The preparation
Years ago, it was routine for a colonoscopy prep to include drinking up to a gallon of liquids, a mixture of a laxative and clear fluids. It was designed to free the colon of all solid matter. That's still the goal today, but the prep is much improved.
Is colonoscopy every 5 or 10 years?
Most people should get a colonoscopy at least once every 10 years after they turn 50. You may need to get one every 5 years after you turn 60 if your risk of cancer increases. Once you turn 75 (or 80, in some cases), a doctor may recommend that you no longer get colonoscopies.
