Documenting Knee Range of Motion
- If a person has 10 degrees of knee hyperextension and 130 degrees of knee flexion, it would be documented as 10-0-130.
- If a person has a 10 degree contracture and loss of full knee extension with 130 degrees of knee flexion, it would be documented as 0-10-130.
What does negative knee extension mean?
If unable to get to 0 this should be recorded as a negative number. Some people can hyperextend their knees, that is straighten beyond 0 degrees. If a subject can hyperextend his knee, then extension is recorded as 0 degrees and the amount of hyperextension is recorded as hyperextension (see next section).
What causes poor knee extension?
Knee extension deficit is frequently observed after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction or rupture and other acute knee injuries. Loss of terminal extension often occurs because of hamstring contracture and quadriceps inactivation rather than mechanical intra-articular pathology.
