Toasting is thought to come from sacrificial libations in which a sacred liquid (blood or wine) was offered to the gods in exchange for a wish, or a prayer for health. It was Greek and Roman tradition to leave an offering to the gods, including alcoholic beverages, during celebrations and commonly after a death.
Where did toasting originate from?
The tradition of toasting hails back to ancient Georgia. (The Country!) The discovery of a bronze tamada, or “toastmaster,” places the practice back to around 500–700 BC. This was before the development of the Georgian written language (Kartvelian).
Who came up with the idea of toast?
The Egyptians generally get credit for leavened bread: the British Museum houses 5,000 year old Egyptian loaves, and King Tut was buried with a stalk of wheat, the symbol of Royalty. But Romans usually get the credit for toast.
