About Hammerite
Unlike conventional paints, Hammerite can be applied directly onto metal without using a primer and undercoat first. Moreover, does hammerite need a primer?
Direct To Rust: In order to use this on non-ferrous (non-rusting) metal you must first apply one coat of Hammerite Special Metals Primer. Direct To Galvanised: No primer is required on weathered / old galvanised steel or aluminium, copper or brass.
Additionally, what type of paint is hammerite? Hammerite paint is a single pack, air drying corrosion resistant and decorative coating. It is based on synthetic resins and is suitably pigmented for optimum weathering properties. Hammerite is fast drying and capable of multi-coat application any time after 4 hours.

Hammerite hammered paint is great for certain applications, metal railings for example, but jus put one liberal coat on and LEAVE IT to hardern over, to give it it's distinctive hammered finish. Definitely don't go over it, especially whilst wet, or you will smear and ruin the nice finish.
A narrow brush is best for use on railings. A broad is best for use on bigger metal object, like a garden table. Apply two thin coats of Hammerite Direct to Rust Metal Paint in Smooth finish for the best results, leaving to dry in between as per instructions on back of pack.
